For arts and cultural organisations this is the geographic area where the largest and most important proportion of audiences live

Things to consider

An analysis of audience postcode data is usually used to calculate the size and shape of a catchment area. It can be defined in a variety of ways, for instance:

  • all postcode sectors that include 1% or more of the audience base
  • the top postal sectors which cumulatively account for a certain percentage of audiences (most commonly 75%)
  • or a drive time or distance from a stated point (as in the map below)
